Watercolour

I was doing a sketch of my Halloween costume the other night and while the paint was drying on that sketch I found and old piece of illustration board. So I found a picture of a half naked women and started to do a watercolour of her. It is far from my best work, but I wanted to think about it less and just do it. the colours are bit strong but I'm not used to using good quality paints, I used to have a graumbacher puck set but Beth recently gave me a bunch of Windsor and Newton tube watercolours. Next painting I think I will concern myself with taking a bit more time and working a bit more effectively with colour. I am far from unhappy with this piece. Not that it looks great but it was fun, and I like having fun.

Jungle Explorer

This is a conceptual image of my Halloween costume this year. Sir Bartholomew Cottonbottom the Seventh. Famous Jungle Explorer. Thanks for the idea Dad. I did this up quick tonight and I painted another picture of a girl for no other reason than that I wanted to, but it is a little too big to scan, so I'll have to take a photo of that.

Quick Self Portrait

Here is a self portrait I did over lunch yesterday.
It's a bit rough but I am glad to see some progress in my all digital sketching style. Using layers to do under-sketches and refining the drawing on another layer then colorizing. It was good fun. I just joined an illustration forum and I needed and avatar so it was a good reason to do a self portrait. I like using photoshop but I must admit I am become a big illustrator fan, can't wait to attempt some flash animation work.

Oh! Thanks to anybody who comes and checks out my blog. I have developed into a bit of a recluse since I started school. I thought that I would re-emerge into the world with a vengeance after school was done. This has not been the case however, as I become a better artist and illustrator, I actually feel compelled to stay in and draw more, or go out and draw more. So just for the record, for all you guys I just never see anymore. I'm around and I'll be in touch again. Right now life is just crazy though. I'm expecting it to calm down after July.

Satyr in ink wash

As I sit here watching Hellboy "Blood and Iron" I feel I must post some more Satyr pictures. These are not the final product. The final product will be done digitally but since I had the original drawings sitting around I thought I'd have a go at ink washes. I think I should have taken them a bit darker in areas, but I was working with bad paper and it was buckling. I still had a lot of fun. Can't wait to work on the final. If you have an opinion please let me know which one you like best.

Goodness, I feel like there is so much to draw and such little time. So many idea's I am fighting competitively these days which I enjoy very much. However I have some creative endeavours that I look forward to attending to once I have sated my appetite for combat.

Still more stuff on the way, GDC button swap is coming up got some sketches going and a good illustration to go on my button. Also some colorized pieces that I have drawn and one that I have been working on for some time. Can't wait to finish and post it.

I'm going to try and do some more sketchcasts I like those, keep me on my toes and drawing guys with pompadours. Good-times.

Ballyhoo

Sketchcast is fun!

Satyr attempt #1

Beth and I are getting married.

So I have been asked to illustrate characters for the wine labels. I accidentally did the first one a couple of months ago you may remember it if you check this out fairly often. It is under the title Fancy Free. It is this illustration of a naked lady springing through the air in the buff. I like the image because it feels expressive and fun. I tried to capture that in my drawing of a satyr. I wanted the labels to have kind of a Greek mythology flavor. So I thought satyr's chasing naked women around and wine went hand in hand. I was quite pleased with my finished sketch. However my lady Beth remarked she would like more face and less penis. So I guess it is back to the drawing board. Here is my first attempt so you can judge which you like better when I do the final.

Willy Awards Illustration

These are the final sketches and the final illustration done in adobe illustrator. I think I will do a colour version soon. Just for fun though the t-shirt only needed to be one colour.

Willy Awards Sketches

I was recently asked to do an illustration for my rugby team The Saracens. Every year they hold a banquet where they give out the Willy Awards, which are t-shirts given as prizes to the individuals who manage to do the most embarrassing things throughout the season.

For the last couple of years I have done the illustrations for these shirts. They are always a depiction of Willy a non fictional Character who's antics the awards I would guess are based on.

In the past there have been pictures of Willy as an Oscar trophy, a Willy version of the Golden Boy, Also I have done versions with Willy Sticking his head between his legs and sniffing his own A$$. It is a vile looking as it sounds...Maybe more.

I missed last year but was approached to do it again this year. So this time I decided to take the approach of Willy as a 1940's Pin Up. The kind you would see on the side of a WWII Bomber.

Here are some of the sketches I did to work out positioning and the stylization of Willy.
